⓵  Thurgood S, Crosby H, Raistrick D, Tober G (2014) Service user, family and friends' views on the meaning of a 'good outcome' of treatment for an addiction problem Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy 21(4):324-32

DOI: 10.3109/09687637.2014.899987

⓶  Iveson-Brown K & Raistrick D (2016) A brief Addiction Recovery Questionnaire derived from the views of service users and concerned others Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy 23(1):41-7

DOI: 10.3109/09687637.2015.1087968

Reduced the original 20 items to 12. Construct validity supported by principal components analysis: three factors loading >0.5 interpreted as subscales: daily activities, substance use involvement, and optimism. Convergent validity supported by stakeholder endorsement of all items as 'important 'or 'very important' by stakeholders who were service users, health care professionals and commissioners.

TPS :: Twelve Promises Scale

Drug & Alcohol Dependence.gif

⓵  Kelly JF & Greene MC (2013) The Twelve Promises of Alcoholics Anonymous: psychometric measure validation and mediational testing as a 12-step specific mechanism of behavior change. Drug and Alcohol Dependence 133(2):633

DOI: 10.1016/j.drugalcdep.2013.08.006

Describes the development of a 26 item scale measuring benefit from 12-step attendance. Construct validity two factors accounting for 44.8-57.3% of variance interpreted as psychological wellbeing and absence of craving. Internal consistency psychological wellbeing 0.91-0.93; absence of craving 0.83-0.92. Predictive validity change greater with 12step involvement sampled at time points zero, 3, 6 & 12 months - the craving subscale accounts for 33.6% of effect on %days abstinent at 4-12months; psychological wellbeing has delayed effect.

ARC :: Assessment of Recovery Capital

Drug & Alcohol Review.jpg

⓵  Groshkova T, Best D, White W (2013) The Assessment of Recovery Capital: Properties and psychometrics of a measure of addiction recovery strengths. Drug and Alcohol Review 32(2):187-94

DOI: 10.1111/j.1465-3362.2012.00489.x

Describes the development of a 50 item scale covering 10 domains of recovery. Construct validity single factor loading 0.54-0.78 on the 10 domains. Internal consistency‣ test-retest reliability 0.50 (physical health) to 0.73 (abstinence). Convergent validity ARC total score correlates with WHOQOL subscales WHOQOLphys 0.83, WHOQOLpsych 0.84, WHOQOLsoc 0.69, WHOQOLenv 0.82  with variation across domains of 0.43-0.87. Correlations with the Treatment Outcome Profile (TOP) ARCtotal with TOPtotal 0.40; ARCphys with TOPphys 0.35; ARCpsych with TOPpsych 0.39. Discriminant validity ARC score cutoff ≥27.5 indicates recovery with sensitivity 92%, specificity 69%, and area under ROC 0.89.

⓵   Laudet A, Hill T (2015) Life Experiences in Active Addiction and in Recovery Among Treated and Untreated Persons: A National Study. Journal of Addictive Diseases 34(1):18

DOI: 10.1080/10550887.2014.975615

Original scale description and survey findings. 37 items giving comprehensive coverage of recovery primarily designed for surveys. Data presented as % of respondents in survey - most items change markedly from 'treatment' to 'recovery' and with duration of 'recovery'. Validity is assumed because items selected from other research.

⓵  McHugo GJ, Drake RE, Burton HL, Ackerson TH (1995) A Scale for Assessing the Stage of Substance Abuse Treatment in Persons with Severe Mental Illness. Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease 183(12):762-7

PMID: 8522938

Describes the development of a practitioner rated measure - identifies eight motivational and behavioural states. Internal consistency‣ interrater reliability: 0.90 (CI 0.82 to 0.94); test-retest reliability: 0.91 (CI 0.86 to 0.94). Convergent validity  correlation  of case manager SATS rating with i) alcohol use -0.50 (CI -0.42 to -0.58);   ii) global assessment scale (GAS) 0.13 (CI -0.21 to 0.37) at 6mth 0.20 and 12mth 0.34. Concurrent validity researcher SATS rating with case manager SATS rating 0.70 (CI 0.67 to 0.73).
